Frequently Asked Questions

We believe in transparency. Here's everything you need to know about naming a star.

The Honest Truth

Star naming is a symbolic gift, not an official astronomical designation. Only the IAU can officially name stars. What we offer is a beautiful way to dedicate a real star with real coordinates to someone you love. The gesture is what matters.

Is this an official star name?

No, and we're upfront about that! Only the International Astronomical Union (IAU) can officially name stars and other celestial bodies. What we offer is a symbolic, commemorative gift – a beautiful way to dedicate a real star to someone special. The star is real, the coordinates are real, the love is real. The "official" part? That's just for fun.

Can I actually see my star?

Yes! Every star in our catalogue is a real star from the HYG Stellar Database. We provide exact coordinates (Right Ascension and Declination) so you can find it in the night sky with a telescope or star-gazing app. You can also use our interactive star map to explore and locate your dedicated star.

What makes this different from a scam?

Transparency. We tell you exactly what you're getting: a symbolic gift featuring a real star with verified astronomical data. We don't claim official recognition, we don't pretend you "own" the star, and we don't use misleading language. Our stars come from the HYG Stellar Database (a compilation of Hipparcos, Yale Bright Star, and Gliese catalogues) – real scientific data, not made-up coordinates.

Who can officially name stars?

Only the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the world authority on astronomical naming. Most stars are identified by catalogue numbers (like HIP 32349). The IAU only names stars in exceptional circumstances, and commercial "star registries" – including us – have no official standing. We're honest about this because we believe the gesture matters more than the bureaucracy.

What exactly do I get?

  • Nano: A beautiful A4 high-resolution PDF certificate with your star's name, coordinates, constellation, and a QR code. Plus a permanent shareable mini-site where your recipient can view their star anytime.
  • Nebula: Everything in Nano, plus a stunning 8-second vertical video journey through space to your star. Perfect for sharing on social media. Video hosted for 365 days.
  • Guardian: Everything in Nebula, plus permanent placement on our public interactive star map and visibility alerts when your star is overhead. One-time lifetime payment.

Is my dedication unique?

Yes! Every dedication receives a unique Registry ID (like YS-2024-SIRIUS-00042) that belongs only to you. Multiple people can dedicate the same star – just like multiple couples can have their wedding at the same beautiful venue – but each dedication is uniquely yours with its own certificate, Registry ID, and permanent record in our database.

Can multiple people dedicate the same star?

Yes, and we think that's beautiful! Popular stars like Sirius, Polaris, and Betelgeuse are beloved by many. Each person who dedicates a star receives their own unique Registry ID and certificate. Think of it like a guest book at a famous landmark – everyone's entry is special and unique, even though they're all celebrating the same star.

Why should I trust you?

Because we're honest. We tell you upfront this is a symbolic gift. We use real astronomical data from verified sources. We show you exactly where your star is in the sky. We don't hide behind fake "official" language. And we provide a permanent, shareable record of your gift that anyone can verify.

Can I get a refund?

Since our products are digital and delivered instantly, we generally don't offer refunds once the certificate has been generated. However, if there's been a genuine error or technical issue, please get in touch and we'll make it right. We're humans, not corporate robots.

How long does my mini-site last?

Forever! Your star's mini-site is permanent and will always be accessible at its unique URL. For Nebula tier, the video is hosted for 365 days (you can download it anytime), but the mini-site itself lasts indefinitely.

Can I choose which star to dedicate?

Yes! Use our interactive star map to browse over 100,000 stars. You can search by name, constellation, or simply explore the night sky to find the perfect star. We also offer curated "Top Picks" featuring the brightest and most famous stars if you need inspiration.
